The Jagiellonian University in Kraków has established a new research center dedicated to exploring the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. The initiative brings together scholars from philosophy, computer science, law and sociology to study issues such as algorithmic bias, data privacy, accountability in automated decision-making and the societal effects of AI deployment across sectors including healthcare, education and public administration. University officials state that the center will foster interdisciplinary projects and partnerships with European institutions already active in similar fields.
Research Priorities and Methods
Initial projects will examine ethical frameworks for AI use in medical diagnostics, fairness in predictive policing tools and transparency requirements for large language models. Researchers plan to combine empirical studies with normative analysis, drawing on Poland’s regulatory environment and EU-wide guidelines. The center will also host regular seminars and maintain an open-access repository of working papers. Funding comes from national research grants and private donations earmarked for technology governance studies. Early collaborations involve faculty from Warsaw University of Technology and the Polish Academy of Sciences.
Opportunities for Students and Broader Impact
Undergraduate and graduate students can participate through elective courses, research assistantships and an annual student conference. The curriculum will integrate case studies from Polish companies adopting AI systems, encouraging practical ethical assessment skills. Officials expect the center to influence national policy discussions and contribute to public awareness campaigns on responsible technology use. Long-term goals include developing certification programs for AI practitioners and supporting doctoral theses focused on emerging ethical challenges in the region.
